On
the first nine holes, it is the 7th
hole that stands out because of the
strategy required to make the par 5.
The regular approach to the green is
three shots. The third shot is important
in terms of ball placement. If you hit
too long on this shot you will be looking
at a three putt at best and in the water
otherwise. The slope of the green is
long and fast , making it preferable
to chip short of the flag and putt uphill.
The final
two holes of the course are par 4's,
both presenting some challenging hazards
to navigate. The 17th offers two bunkers
and a coconut jungle that almost. guarantees
a lost ball if a shot strays to the
right. The second shot is to place on
the very narrow green. Again, a pitched
shot using the 7 - or 8 - iron is probably
the best to keep the ball from running.
The 18th
is the signature hole for the cousre.
The main obstacle shot is the first
to the left that runs between a big
fairway bunker and a water hazard. A
second bunker markes it differcult to
get to the green. From there is the
green, sloping back to front down to
the water on the right with another
three bunkers on the left. This is not
an easy hole to end the round, especially
in a tournament when the flag will be
placed close to the water on the right.
It is
feature of the course that twosomes
are not allowed, in order to facilitate
the flow of play. During the week one
group can play up to five. While this
requires a little more coordination
of schedules, the upshot is that the
flow of play is well regulated. The
course offers a guarantee that a round
will wrap up in four and a half hours
and that play will start within five
minutes of the booking time.
Green
fees have recently been boosted - 1,100
baht (US$26) on the weekdays (1,500
baht for non - residents) and 2,100
baht (US$48) on the weekends (2,800
baht for non - residents) to fund increased
service quality. According to Krachang,
the caddy service is friendly and professional.
In addition to the course, there is
the clubhouse, locker room, and swimming
pool. A driving range with grass instead
of astroturf is open as of January 2003.
Amenities suited to the golfer mixing
pleasure with business are the executive
restaurant, VIP room and function room
and a banquet room accommodating up
to 250 people.
All in
all, it is a course that offers a level
of play in Thailand on par with international
standards. The combination of slopes
and other contours with the abundance
of hazards and heavily treed fringes
makes it easy to get on trouble; the
design lends itself to planning each
shot and careful placement of the ball.
On a good day, even a pro golfer can
still find a challenge at The Vintage
Club.
